For thousands of years, lock and key systems have been utilized to keep people and possessions safe from unwanted visitors. Though the earliest known lock and key device was found in the ruins of Nineveh, Assyria’s capital, evidence suggests that Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations all independently developed their own lock and key devices. The Renaissance saw an increased attention to the physical beauty of the world, and locksmithing was no exception. Master locksmiths produced intricate and finely wrought ornamental locks that are still admired for their beauty and detail. As lock picking became popular in the 18th century, locksmiths began to develop more complicated mechanisms that could withstand burglary.
