Many individuals will spend a free weekend, or even a couple of weeks, heading to a place that they have never been to before. For many, the destination will be the bright lights and active nature of New York City. The fun times and rewarding cultural experience that can be found there are main reasons why city travels there are so popular for tourists with some free time. But while it is easy to find lists of things to do online and in city travel guides, there are some things that individuals should avoid that free New York City travel guides might not mention.
1. Avoid the Empire State Building
Most tourists who head to NYC will want to make a trip to the Empire State Building in order to get a view of the entire city. However, the long lines make the experience far less enjoyable than it could be. In fact, there might be five different ones that people have to deal with. Places like the Rainbow Room and Top of the Rock offer similar experiences without the huge waits.
2. Do Not Eat in Times Square
The neon glow of Times Square makes it a popular spot for tourists to head when they want to take in all that NYC has to offer. But as the area became more family friendly, chains like Red Lobster and Applebees moved in. Those restaurants in the city are the same as they are in the suburbs, but much more expensive. So heading a few blocks away from Times Square and finding more authentic places is a good idea.
3. Laugh Somewhere Besides Times Square
Lots of comedy clubs, especially in Times Square, will hire aspiring comedians to hand out fliers and try to get tourists to their club. However, many of them offer no real NYC experience, other than maybe long lines, and there is no guarantee that comedians will actually be funny. Heading downtown to the Upright Citizens Brigade is a better way to get a laugh or two.
4. Never Flag Down a Pedi Cab
If someone is able to find a New York City travel guide free, they might see a recommendation for pedi cabs. However, they are a more expensive and slower method of transportation than other options. Plus, nothing marks a tourist more than being towed around by a bicycle. Taking the subway is probably the best way to complete city travels without spending too much.
Haha, wish I had seen this list before I went last year. Im pretty sure I did every one of those things.
I dont like cities to begin with, but the massive crowd in Times Square was a complete turn off. Ill never go back there again, even if I do like Red Lobster lol
